The celebration soon became quite different from European celebrations as parts of African and American Indian cultures were integrated.
All social, gender and class boundaries were forgotten during the celebration.
Even slaves were allowed to be free for three days!

Carnival takes place in February, which is the hottest month in the Southern hemisphere.
Summer is well underway!
Over 500,000 tourists make their way to Rio each year to take part in this one in a lifetime experience.
The alcohol will flow, the dancing with start and the memories will last a lifetime.

This celebration takes months to prepare.
There are so many different facets to Carnival that is takes a lot of people to pull off such a large celebration.

In Rio de Janeiro, there will many parades led by Samba schools with breathtaking dances and costumes.
Samba is a Brazilian dance and musical genre that is an integral part of their culture.

The Fat King, or King Momo, is crowned which marks the beginning of Carnival.

They are the ones who put together the elaborate costumes, floats and performances.
Local samba schools are ready to show off the most extravagant costumes as they dance the nights away.
Samba is as important to Brazilians as soccer, so that says a lot!

You can witness this part of Brazilian culture in the parades that go on around town.
The Samba Parade was originally performed in the streets, but has since moved to the purpose-built Sambodromo.
Samba schools have to pick themes, write music, write lyrics and perform in order to participate.
They spend all year preparing for Carnival and take great pride in designing their costumes and floats.
